Moosehead Lake Timber Company Given Fossil Fools Award

Filed under: Maine — liberalicon @ 3:04 pm

In the Eastern Hemisphere and in the Western Hemisphere alike, hundreds of activities are taking place to mark Fossil Fools Day, an activist April first day of civil disobedience against the engines of the dirty oil economy.

Getting more local, in the area of Moosehead Lake in Maine, the Native Forest Network held an awards ceremony outside the offices of the Plum Creek timber company, giving the company a special award in recognition of its plans to “develop” 20,000 acres of woodland. “Develop”, in the language of timber companies, means that they’ll cut down all the trees.

Does this place the Plum Creek timber company in the category of Fossil Fools? Oh, you betcha. They’re taking away forests that continue to sequester carbon from the atmosphere well into the trees’ old age.

“We’re delighted by Plum Creek’s efforts to turn Maine into Florida,” said one protester at the tongue-in-cheek ceremony “We’re committed to fostering a hospitable, year-round outdoor golf climate in every corner of the globe, and Plum Creek’s Moosehead development plan will help to do just that.”

Thanks to the Native Forest Network, and to everybody else around the world who is taking action to draw attention to the antiquated industrial forces that are refusing to adapt to the present crisis of climate change. You’re thinking globally, and acting locally.

Right on!

Maine Progressive Caucus On The Verge Of Disappearing

Filed under: Maine — liberalicon @ 12:35 pm

Alert to Maine progressives: The Maine Progressive Caucus is on the verge of disappearing from the Internet. The old web site of the Maine Progressive Caucus, at mainecaucus.net, is no longer to be found at all, and the newer web site, at maineprogressive.org, is about to go under too.

The web site expired on January 20, and is now hosting ads for jobs in Maine. Soon, if the Maine Progressive Caucus doesn’t get a move on, the site will be selling credit cards, pharmaceuticals, and shady business deals.

If you know someone with the Maine Progressive Caucus, please get in touch with them to let them know what’s going on. If you’re from the Maine Progressive Caucus yourself, and you need a helping hand with the site, leave a message here in the comment section. Tell me how to get in touch with you, and I’ll see what I can do to help out.

Hallowell Maine Has Tiny Republican Turnout, Votes For Romney

Filed under: Maine — liberalicon @ 7:13 pm

The town of Hallowell, in the county of Kennebec, Maine, held its Republican presidential caucus today. Only 30 people showed up.

16 votes were for Mitt Romney. 6 votes were for John McCain. 5 votes were for Ron Paul

Mike Huckabee didn’t get any votes.

Two Republicans left their voting cards blank in protest against the poor quality of the Republican presidential candidates, and the remaining Hallowell Republican elected to remain uncommitted.

All in all, it was a lethargic showing for everyone involved.

AntiBush Kennebunkport Protest This Weekend

Filed under: Maine — liberalicon @ 7:43 am

This Saturday, August 25th, starting at 10:30 AM, there will be a rally and march for peace in Kennebunkport, Maine, the town where the Bush family, including President George W. Bush, “summers”. That’s an upper class term for having a long, long vacation.

In addition to the rally and march, there will be an antiwar activist celebration, with the Indigo Girls, Dave Rovics, Inanna, Pat Scanlon, the Leftist Marching Band, Bojah & the Insurrection, Emma’s Revolution, SON of NUN, the Congolese Banya Mulenge Tutsi Choir, and the Aserela Acholi Singing And Dance Group playing music long after the Bush family servants have shuttered up their windows to protect America’s aristocracy from the hoi polloi.

Democratic presidential candidate Dennis Kucinich will be there too, so you’ll have the chance to hear his ideas, and maybe ask him a couple of questions too, if you attend.
